The basic cross-browser drop-down validating menu

19th March 2006

Updated 30th July 2006

NO javascript - just CSS - and it validates

Information

For those of you who just want a basic drop-down menu that works in Opera, IE5.5, IE6, IE7 beta, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Safari 1.3.2 and Firefox 1.0.4 (does not work on Mac IE5) then this one is for you.

I have stripped out the flyout submenu styling, arranged the styling that is left into some order and added comments to help you see what is going on.

Update 30th July 2006

This has now been much simplified to bring into line with my latest discoveries. The xhtml has been revised to remove the need for different main menu links for IE and all other browsers. The same xhtml is used for all browsers.

Similarly, the need for separate styles for IE and all other browsers has now been replaced by just a single style sheet which is simplified until it is almost non existent.

If you look at the style, which is now embeded in the head of this page, you will not believe your eyes. The CSS has been cut by more than 50%.
